Tanzania, oficialmente la República
Unida de Tanzania, es un país situado en la costa este de África Central.
Limita al norte con Kenia y Uganda, al oeste con Ruanda, Burundi, la República
Democrática del Congo, al sur con Zambia, Malaui y Mozambique y al este con el
océano Índico. Su capital es Dodoma. El nombre del país proviene de la unión de
las palabras «Tanganica» y «Zanzíbar»
La economía de Tanzania se basa
fundamentalmente en la agricultura, aunque sólo es cultivable el 4% de la
superficie total del país, este sector representa la mitad del PIB, el 85% de
las exportaciones y, además, emplea al 90% de la clase trabajadora. La
industria del país se limita básicamente al proceso de los productos agrícolas.
Tanzania tiene también importantes recursos naturales, entre ellos minas de oro
(como la de Tulawaka) y reservas de gas natural en el delta del Rufiji.
Principalmente Tanzania produce: café, algodón, sisal, té y diamantes.
La emisión de sellos postales,
principalmente destinado al coleccionismo internacional, es también una
importante fuente de ingreso para su economía.
Las organizaciones financieras
internacionales han prestado durante muchos años fondos para rehabilitar la
deteriorada red de infraestructuras tanzana, no obstante esto se convirtió en
un problema al tener que devolver los préstamos más los intereses.
Esta
situación se solucionó el 5 de enero de 2006, cuando el Banco Mundial, el Fondo
Monetario Internacional y el Banco Africano de Desarrollo condonaron la deuda a
19 países (entre ellos Tanzania) por ser los países más pobres y endeudados del
mundo (PPME). Esta decisión fue tomada a partir de una propuesta que hizo el
Reino Unido en la conferencia del G8 en Gleneagles, Escocia.
