Somalía, formalmente conocida como República Federal de Somalía, es un país ubicado en el llamado Cuerno de África, al este del continente africano. Al oeste y noroeste limita con Etiopía y Yibuti, al sur con Kenia, al norte con el golfo de Adén, y al este con el océano Índico. Tras una larga guerra civil, el país se dividió en pequeños estados y facciones independientes, sin un poder que lo gobierne en su totalidad.
En el año 2004 diferentes
facciones llegaron a un acuerdo para conformar un gobierno de transición,
unificando el país. Finalmente en el año 2012 se aprobó una nueva Constitución
provisional que regirá para todo el país unificado. Su ciudad capital y más
poblada es Mogadiscio.
Desde julio de 2011, atraviesa
una de las peores crisis alimentarias de su historia, por cuenta de una sequía,
catalogada por los medios de comunicación como la más intensa en 20 años y que
afectó algunas zonas de Kenia y Etiopía. Más de 3 millones de personas se
encuentran en riesgo de morir por desnutrición y algunas zonas no eran
accesibles para los organismos de ayuda por la presencia de grupos insurgentes
islamistas.
Hacia el año 2012 diversos
partidos políticos se han reunido para dotar al país de una constitución,
poniendo así fin al gobierno de transición establecido en el 2004 y unificando
tras décadas de conflictos al país.
Somalia tiene una de las tasas de
infección del VIH más bajas de todo el continente. Esto se ha atribuido a la
naturaleza musulmana de la sociedad Somalí y s adherencia a las bases morales
islámicas. Mientras la tasa de prevalencia estimada del VIH en Somalia en 1987
(el año de informe del primer caso) era del 1% de los adultos, una estimación
más reciente datada en 2007 coloca la cifra en tan sólo un 0,5% de la población
adulta de la nación pese al conflicto armado que tuvo lugar en el país.
Aunque la sanidad está hoy en día muy centrada
en el sector privado, el sistema público de salud del país está actualmente en
proceso de reconstrucción y está siendo supervisado por el ministerio de
sanidad.
